As we learned from the recent Jazz Online podcast featuring the band Oregon, Jim Pepper’s composition “Witchi-Tai-To” is a special piece of music that holds a certain mystical quality. Oregon bassist Glen Moore grew up with Jim and describes him as a uniquely talented musician who singularly weaved his Native American heritage into jazz. On this revealing video segment taken from the documentary Pepper’s Pow Wow, Jim Pepper performs his classic “Witchi-Tai-To” as well as shares the secrets behind his distinct approach to music.
And on the clip below, listen to what many feel is Jim’s definitive version of “Witchi Tai To.” It is featured on a 1983 album titled Comin’ and Goin’ but please note this album is out of print and therefore hard to find. The track includes Jim with Don Cherry, John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Kenny Werner, Nana Vasconcelos, Collin Walcott and others.
