NYU Jazz Interview Series: Oregon

NYU Jazz Interview Series: Oregon

I can’t believe it. Sitting next to me on stage at B&N are Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, Glen Moore, and Mark Turner. OREGON! If I made a list of groups that totally inspired me to pursue a career in music, OREGON would definitely be on the short list, along with Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Return to Forever to name a few. Over the past few days, I had the opportunity to hang out with the group as they were rehearsing at NYU in preparation for an upcoming recording session. What a treat for both students and faculty to watch their rehearsal process unfold new works. With the members so very comfortable with each other’s musical personalities, often it seemed that mere gestures were only required to piece the music together. My favorite experience with the group was sharing some downtime as I shuttled everyone from NYU to B&N for their interview via the number 5 train. With story after story, forty years of touring has left few areas unexplored by the group. Road warriors to say the least, I hope their journey does not end any time soon.
